Good Reads/Random Cool Sites (10/3/2008)

No more Palin posts for awhile, I promise, but there is one non-political Palin link today.

I'm among the many people who have wondered about Palin's accent, which sounds Fargo-ish (meaning northern Minnesotan) to me. As Jesse Sheidlower explains, it's actually "an Alaskan accent, one from the Matnuska and Susitna Valley region, where Palin's hometown, Wasilla, is located." (h/t: Language Log)

I can haz Book of Mormon?

Rolling Stone has an ungenerous and unfair but not untruthful profile of John McCain.

US prisons operate on a mackerel economy.

  1. Mack economy. That's brilliant!

  2. As a side note on the mackerel economy in prison (which, while laughable, is very real, though in a pinch other commissary items also have value, as does state-issued toilet paper), a can of jack-mack dropped down into a sock is a favorite weapon-of-choice among Virginia inmates as both items can be carried about separately without being considered contraband.

Turning it into a weapon takes only a moment and it's a bloody effective club when you come right down to it.

When the fight is over, leave the unidentifiable prison-issue sock behind and go back to your cut to enjoy a great protein boost following your impromptu workout.

Toss the dented can immediately in the trash.

    Evidence gone.

Just remember to brush your teeth after.
