Covers that you might not have known are covers: "I'm a Believer"

"I'm a Believer."

Familiar version: The Monkees (1966)
Original version: Neil Diamond (recorded 1966, released 1967)

This was written by Neil Diamond and recorded by him first, but the Monkees version, which spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and sold about 10 million copies, was released before Diamond's.

The Monkees (1966)

Neil Diamond (1966/1967)
This is actually quite good.

Lots of times, the most familiar version of a song isn't the original version. I write about some of these "covers that you might not have known are covers" on occasional Saturdays.

  1. Do you ever listen to the Coverville Podcast? It's one of my favorites.

I like both of these versions. Neil Diamond will always hold a special place for me. My Mom loved him and he reminds me of all of us cleaning the house on Saturday morning. We each got to select our favorite album to stack onto the stereo. Nei was always there. LOVE it!

  2. No, I'd never heard of it. I love covers though. I've got about 1200 songs (counting originals and covers) in my "covers" playlist in my iTunes.
